Palliative Care Booklets – Information for Clients, Families and Carers

Latrobe Community Health Service (LCHS) has worked with local families and carers to develop two Palliative Care booklets to support clients and carers at home.

Nicole Steers, Director Ambulatory Care explains that the two booklets are an important Palliative Care resource available to the community.

“We produced these booklets to provide assistance and support to those who are caring for someone with a life threatening illness,” Ms Steers explains.  “There are some areas that may be considered difficult to talk about, so we have tried to address these with sensitivity and honesty.”

“Working with families and carers was the key in making sure these booklets were presented in a way that is relevant, understandable and that it meets their specific needs,” Ms Steers adds.  “Their input was invaluable in the production of these booklets.”

The two booklets, one covering Palliative Care generally and the other focusing on end of life, are now offered to every Palliative Care client and carer.  They are also made available to other health services and local GPs.

The Palliative Care service at LCHS provides support and symptom management for clients, their carers and families.  The program assists with referrals to other support services and networks in the local community with the aim of the client being at the centre of care.
