Latrobe Community Health Service (LCHS) announced on 21 July 2011 that it plans to open an Integrated Primary Healthcare (IPHC) Clinic at its Morwell Centre.

LCHS CEO Ben Leigh said that the IPHC clinic has received no government subsidies, including Federal Government GP Super Clinic program funding.

“LCHS is here to provide services to improve the health of the population, improve access and reduce inequalities in our community, not compete with other General Practices,” Mr Leigh said.

“Our IPHC Clinic will help meet the current and future health needs of Latrobe City.”

“Figures released by Latrobe City Council show the number of people aged over 65 is expected to increase by 23.5%, and represent 19.8% of the population by 2021.”

“There will need to be more GPs in the area to cater for the ageing population and the burden of chronic disease,” he said.

When operational early next year, the IPHC Clinic will open Monday – Friday from 9.00 am – 8.00 pm offering bulk billing via the MBS for all clients.

“By opening until 8.00 pm we are able to offer appointments to those who work full time, who may require an appointment for themselves or a family member without having to take time off work,” Mr Leigh said.

“We are also developing a strategy for our GPs to provide care for our clients after 8.00 pm.”

“We are committed to ongoing regular communication with the Central West Gippsland Division of General Practice and local GP practices to address any issues and concerns they may have,” he said.
