Five tips to maintain a healthy back

Back pain is one of the most common reasons why people see their doctor.

Back pain is one of the most common reasons why people see their doctor.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare estimate up to 90% of people will suffer from lower back pain in some form at some point in their lives.

Here, we share five tips to maintain a healthy back:

  1.  Try not to sit still for long periods of time
  2. Avoid lifting heavy objects
If you cannot avoid lifting heavy objects, lift properly,or use proper equipment if it’s available.
  3. Change your mattress
Surfaces that are too soft or too hard can aggravate a sore back.
  4. Pay attention to your posture
Poor posture is a key source of back pain. Avoid slumping, slouching or perching on the edge of tables or chairs.
  5. Gentle exercise and stretching
Strengthening the muscles of your stomach and back can help with pain, as will gentle stretches. Maintaining a healthy body weight can also reduce extra strain on your back.
