Winter may not have officially started yet, but the chill has well and truly set in. But the season for snuggly jumpers and hot cuppas also mean it’s the time of year for all manner of sickness – here are our top tips to help you stay healthy this winter.

1. Try new activities
Tempting as it is to stay curled up in front of the television, your body will thank you for maintaining an active lifestyle.

Try a new activity, like a wintry walk in the national parks or by the beach. If you’d like to stay warm, try a new indoor exercise class like barbell workouts, barre or tai chi.

2. Fill up on healthy food
Comfort food on a cold night tastes especially delicious.

Fill your belly with hearty and delicious soups or stews loaded with fresh veggies to ensure you continue to get your recommended serve of vegetables a day.

3. Stay social
Your mental health may suffer in winter with the shorter daylight hours and fewer opportunities for socialising.

Take up a new class at your local Neighbourhood House, start a new fitness plan with a friend or volunteer your time with a group or organisation. Latrobe Community Health Service has a great team of volunteers – give us a call on 1800 242 696 to find out more.

4. Get the flu shot
Getting your flu shot isn’t just about protecting you from the flu – it’s also about protecting the people around you. Women who are pregnant, the elderly, young children and those who have a long-term health condition are especially at risk of the virus.

If you haven’t had your flu shot yet, make an appointment to see one of our doctors in Churchill, Morwell or Traralgon – phone 1800 242 696 or book online at www.lchs.com.au
