Home care package costs and fees

Unfortunately, working out how much a home care package costs can be complicated! But you have a right to clear, patient explanations of the costs of a home care package. The complexity is due partly to the way the Australian Government assesses your income. Some service providers make it more complicated by having difficult-to-understand fee structures.

Government contributions to home care package costs

The money in a home care package comes from two sources: you contribute, and the Government contributes. The combined money is the ‘home care package’.

This is the approximate maximum Government contribution for each level of home care package:

  • Level 1 Home Care package: $10,299
  • Level 2 Home Care package: $18,113
  • Level 3 Home Care package: $39,418
  • Level 4 Home Care package: $59,757

Home care package fees

Income-tested care fee

If you are on a full pension, you don’t have to contribute anything. If your income is higher than the basic pension, you may contribute to the cost of your home care package. The Government contribution to your home care package is reduced – but the overall amount of the home care package (your contribution + Government contribution) remains the same.

There are annual and lifetime caps that apply to the income-tested care fee. Once these caps are reached, you cannot be asked to pay any more income-tested care fees.

Basic daily fee

In addition to the income-tested care fee, the Government allows service providers to charge up to $10.75 per day. This is called the basic daily fee. Service providers can choose to charge all of this amount, or part of it. Others – like Latrobe Community Health Service – choose not to charge this fee at all. You should check the basic daily fee if you are comparing service providers.

Financial disadvantage

It’s important to note that no-one should be disadvantaged by financial hardship. If you are unsure how much you might have to pay, please call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to discuss your circumstances.

They then check and hand-pick a mix of businesses to deliver that plan. We have service coordinators to help with any changes or additions to the services you receive. And we regularly visit you to check in and make sure you are getting the most from your Home Care Package.

We pride ourselves on transparent, easy-to-understand information about how much your home care package will cost.
